Bienvenidos a los Estados Unidos

Category: General

I was going to write some profound statement on the issues of the Mexican invasion...I mean illegal immigration, and on the recent revelation that the NSA is collecting our phone call records. But it seems no one really cares about these things.

Oh well.

I guess I'll go back to reading my copy of Mil Novecientos Ochenta y Cuatro.

Down in Flames

Category: Sports

I have no life.

My wife was out doing Mother's Day shopping with her sister. I had no work to do, so I turned on the the TV. Seems that's all I ever do anymore in my free time...watch a movie or watch TV.

Today, I stopped on OLN which was airing Game 7 of the first-round series between the Calgary Flames and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. The Lightning were eliminated from the playoffs the other day, and I find I need a hockey fix, so I keep the game on.

It's the first time I've seen the Flames play since June 7, 2004, and I find, out of sheer habit, that I'm pulling against them. It's nothing personal, but after seven Stanley Cup games between the Lightning and Flames two years ago (including witnessing all four Lightning home games in person), the word "Flames" and names like Iginla and Kiprusoff just cause that pavlovian response. There's just no getting around it.

And then the game ends. Anaheim wins 3-0. The negative feeling towards Calgary is gone. Time to go back to flipping channels.

We'll meet again...

Category: Movies

As I sit here on the couch putting my site together, I have the Stanley Kubrick film Dr. Strangelove playing on the TV. The B-52 is about to drop the bomb, and it occurs to me just how absurd the situation is. At the same time, it's a scary thought that a situation like this could ever occur.

And yet the government still hasn't learned the lesson. Even Pinellas County now fluoridates the water, over the protests of many of its residents. It's only a matter of time until someone who works at McDill gets fed up with the situation and flips out like General Jack D. Ripper.

In all seriousness, even with the USSR no longer around, the threat of nuclear proliferation has not ended, and in many ways, the situation is probably more unstable. The nuclear enemies of the day are now Iran and North Korea. As smaller countries, I wonder if they will just get fed up at being bullied and strike out at their enemies.

It's a situation that needs to be resolved sooner, rather than later.
